Keep Your Indoor Air Clean!
Keep Your Indoor Air Clean!!
Here are some simple tips as to how you can keep your indoor air clean so you and your family can breathe easier.Â
* Allergies and Asthma is a growing problem. The EPA identifies indoor air quality as the number one pollution problem we have today. Today, there are many people coming down with more allergies and asthma than ever before. It is affecting everyone in the home, but the most alarming news is that it is affecting the children in higher numbers. Their lungs are so clean and fragile that the minute these pollutants enter the home, they are getting hit the hardest. Why do we hear more about cases involving children getting asthma today than any other time? Well, it is because many of the household cleaning products we use are toxic, ex., ammonia, bathroom cleaning products, furniture polish, disinfectants, carpet cleaners, etc… In addition, new home construction is on the rise and the use of toxic paints, carpeting, formaldehyde, and floor finishes, etc., is being used during construction of your homes. These are just a couple of examples, the fact is, the air we breathe outside is not as bad as the air we breathe indoors. It is time to become more aware of how we can take charge of our family’s safe breathing. I hope you will find some of these “Tips” useful.
Air Purifier: An air purifier will help to keep the air flowing in your home, while cleaning the dust, pollen, dust mites, particles, odors, VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compouds), and tobacco smoke. The magic is in the air purifier filters, that is what eliminates the airborne particles. * If you are suffering from allergies related to dust, pollen, dust mites, and pet dander than an air purifier with a HEPA filter, which removes 99.97% of all airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns, can work well for you. HEPA filters are known to be the most effective air cleaning method at removing the solid particles. In this day in age, no home, place of employment, classroom or hospital should be without an air purifier. That is what this world is coming to!
Assess your indoor living environment: Be more cautious with the cleaning products that you use in your home. Not too long ago we became “really aware” that we needed to take the time to read the labels on our food products. We discovered that some of the ingredients were not good for our health. Well, we also need to be as diligent when screening the cleaning products that we use. Unfortunately, the manufacturers do not have to list all the ingredients they use to kill germs because they say it is “proprietary information”. The good news is that a lot more companies are popping up creating healthier cleaning products, so there no longer is a void of those products on the market. Take the time to do the research, it is worth it.
Here are some other household tips that will help to keep your home free of airborne particles and odors:
* Vacuum Cleaners – Use a central vacuum cleaner vented to the outdoors, this will help to control dust mites. There are also other vacuum cleaners on the market that actually have HEPA filtration, which helps to trap the small particles and dust that can cause an allergic reaction.
* Bedding – Wash your bedding and blankets in hot water (130 – 140 degrees F) to kill dust mites. Do this at least once a week. Dust mites love humidity, so if you live in a humid climate you might want to invest in a dehumidifier.
* Home Improvements – Select paints that have reduced or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), this will lower the amount of chemical emissions introduced into your home.
* Dry cleaning – The chemicals used during the dry cleaning process can contain volatile organic compounds. Let your dry-cleaned items air out for a day or two before bringing them inside your home.
