Who Needs Exercise And Diet When We Have Liposuction?

Ever since liposuction first became available in 1974, it has only become more and more popular as a way to remove the stubborn fatty deposits which simply do not respond to diet and exercise. At that time, there were people who thought that liposuction could be the ideal way to get rid of all their fat, so that proper diet and exercise need never concern them again. We know now, of course that those people were engaging in wishful thinking, and that liposuction can never compete with the benefits of eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly.

Liposuction was always meant as a tool for assisting otherwise healthy people to eliminate unwanted fat in specific areas of their bodies after they had tried to diet and exercise it away. Liposuction is an extremely effective form of body sculpting, but is not the answer to a couch-potato life style.

A comparison of liposuction with diet and exercise will reveal the many risks associated with liposuction which are absent in diet and exercise. Liposuction is a surgical procedure, and can have unwanted side effects like excessive bleeding, significant swelling, infection, shock, pulmonary fluid buildup, burns, or perforation of the bowel. Liposuction can even cause skin tissue necrosis and in some very rare instances, has been fatal. There are also cases in which liposuction created irregular body contouring.

Exercise and diet, on the other hand, have very few risks other than the muscle and joint strains which can come from overdoing the exercise. Both of them, however, offer numerous long-term health benefits, including improved cardiovascular function, mental clarity, and raised energy levels. While the results of liposuction surgery will keep fat away from the surgical sites over the long term, any liposuction patient who does not observe a sensible diet and exercise plan after surgery will only gain that fat back somewhere else.

If exercise and diet have allowed you to reach your desired weight, but you are still struggling to lose fat around your thighs, abdomen, buttocks, knees, or upper arms, then liposuction is appropriate. But you must be healthy and have clearance from your cosmetic surgeon before proceeding, because not everyone is an appropriate candidate fro liposuction.

Anybody suffering from diabetes or heart disease, or anyone whose skin is inelastic due to his or her being overweight should address those problems before considering liposuction. If your skin is not elastic, you will need to lose weight and exercise in order to firm it so that your liposuction results are what you want them to be.

If you’re a smoker, you will have to quit several months in advance of having liposuction, because smoking constricts the blood vessels and greatly increases the liposuction recovery period. Your cosmetic surgeon will be the one to decide if you need to spend a few months on a diet and exercise regimen before you are ready for liposuction. This is critical because liposuction, as we already mentioned, is going to be fare more effective when used on patients who are already close to their normal weights and have firm, supple, elastic skin.

Liposuction, then, is nothing more than a procedure to vacuum stubborn fat deposits from your otherwise trim body. It is not, and never has been, a magic solution to a major weight problem.
