What Medications Interact With Viagra?
![]() |
Like with any other medication there are always drug interactions that have to be taken into consideration. The same holds true with Viagra which is why the FDA approved it through prescription only. This allows prescribing doctors an opportunity to examine a medical history prior to making a decision on whether or not to dispense and what might be the best dose.
The biggest adverse reaction when taking Viagra would be with anyone that is using a nitrate drug, including nitroglycerin for chest pain or any heart disorders. This also includes Nitro-Dur, Nitro-Bid, Minitran, Deponit, Transderm-Nitro), isosorbide dinitrate (Dilatrate-SR, Isordil, Sorbitrate), and isosorbide mononitrate (Imdur, ISMO, Monoket), or recreational drugs such as amyl nitrate or nitrite also called “poppers” (Drug Information).
Your physician should be well aware of certain drugs that you may be taking before he dispenses Viagra to you. These drugs would include bosentan, blood thinners, cimetidine, certain antibiotics, doxazosin, prazosin, Terazosin, HIV medicines such as amprenavir (Agenerase), tipranavir (Aptivus), darunavir (Prezista), efavirenz (Sustiva), nevirapine (Viramune), indinavir (Crixivan), saquinavir (Invirase, Fortovase), lopinavir/ritonavir (Kaletra), fosamprenavir (Lexiva), ritonavir (Norvir), atazanavir (Reyataz), or nelfinavir (Viracept), antifungal medications such as itraconazole or ketoconazole, carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, rifampin, or rifabutin (Drug Information).
There are other drugs that can cause an interaction when taken with Viagra. You must also include any over the counter medications, vitamins, minerals, herbal products, or anything else that you might be taking, even diet supplements. The biggest problem is with blood thinners and nitrates as there is a concern for a sudden and dangerously low drop in blood pressure. Other considerations that should be taken before consuming Viagra is the fact that if you are planning to consume generous amounts of alcohol it may decrease your inability to get an erection, it can cause a decrease in blood pressure which could result in dizziness and/or fainting. Grapefruit juice should not be consumed while you are taking Viagra because grapefruit is known for increasing the amount of Sildenafil in your bloodstream.
Those with liver or kidney problems may be able to take Viagra but might have to have their dose lowered. If you are taking any of the drugs or products that are mentioned on this list that does not mean that you absolutely can not take Viagra because often you can mix certain drugs with Viagra but it must be done under close supervision of a physician.
