Drugs in drinking water is a scary thought. Just how much truth is there in that thought? Do we know? One study I read said our water supplies are not tested for these contaminants. Another study said according to the Environmental Protection Agency researchers found “emerging contaminants,” almost everywhere they have looked for them. These “emerging contaminants” they referenced were drugs found in drinking water. I would say the statement has some truth in it.

Experts say we have better technology that detects drugs in drinking water. Since this is fairly new information, the effect on the human body of drugs found in drinking water is unknown. Even though the amounts are miniscule, the verdict is not in as how much is too much? Scientists are scrambling to figure that out.

Just how are these drugs getting into our drinking water? Here are a few ways:

· Users of prescriptions drugs discard their unused drugs in the toilet or wash them down the drain · Users of drugs excrete them or wash them away in the shower · The per capita of drug users have increased greatly, due to more drugs on the market than before, and the increased population that are taking drugs, including children and aging baby boomers · More cities are processing treated sewage into drinking water supplies

The drugs found in drinking water include antibiotics, well known pain medications such as ibuprofen and naproxen, anti-convulsive medications for epilepsy, mood stabilizers for bipolar disease, anti-anxiety drugs, medication for heart problems and sex hormones to name a few. Many water treatment facilities are not set up to remove these contaminants from their drinking water.

The federal government does not require our drinking water to be tested for these pharmaceuticals, nor is there any information on safety limits of drugs in drinking water. More studies are being done to decipher just how much of a threat drugs found in drinking water contributes to the overall long-term health of humans.

Even some bottled water comes from tap water and not from some fresh mountain stream companies would like to have you believe, so even a fresh bottle of water is not safe from drugs in drinking water. Rural water from your own well is not protected either.

To safe guard your drinking water research different water purification treatments and find the one that will remove all drugs found in drinking water. Until the experts decide how much is too much, take the responsibility to protect your long-term health.
