Many people think that succumbing to stress is a sign of weakness, but nothing could be further from the truth! Chronic stress may paralyze your life. Moreover, people today are living with a significantly higher level of stress than their parents or their grandparents did. Stress can cause very real health problems and if you think that you might be affected, there are a few things that you should think about.

The effects of stress

The first thing is that stress-related health issues can creep up on you. While stress can be traced directly to a specific source, say, an accident or the death of a loved one, it can also be a great deal more insidious than that. If conditions at your workplace have been going steadily downhill, you might find stress problems creeping up on you. One day, you’ll look up and realize that your jaw’s been tight for what feels like months or that you’ve been running a constant, low-grade level of illness. Stress can seep into your life very subtly, so it is important to be self-aware.

What are some early warning signs of stress-related problems?

There are some early warning signs that stress might be becoming a problem for you. Have you noticed that you are having sleeping troubles? Stress can do a number of things to your sleeping cycles. It can make you an insomniac or can make you want to sleep for long stretches of time. While getting a good night’s sleep is beneficial, sleeping to escape stress will leave you feeling sore and irritable. If you find that your temperature has gotten shorter, or that you’ve fallen prey to bouts of depression and anxiety, there is a good chance that stress is overtaking your life.

How does stress affect your health?

A constant, unexplainable illness can also be a sign of stress adversely affecting your life. Some people describe a constant upset stomach, while others complain of persistent headaches. Either of these things can make the business of trying to live your life difficult and they are just tow examples of the way that stress affects your body.

The list of illnesses that are related to stress is quite long. Stomach cramping, bloating, hives, insomnia, quickened weight gain and weight loss, high blood pressure and neck and back pain are just a few of the things that can result from stress, and it certainly doesn’t end there. You’ll find that stress can have some lingering effects as well; stress can make it harder for women to get pregnant and lead to heart problems that can linger for ages.

What should I do if I suspect that stress might be affecting my health? Many of the symptoms above might have deeper related issues, so if your symptoms are becoming severe enough that you are worrying about them, take your concerns to a doctor. A doctor can always rule out any physical causes, and if necessary, a doctor can also point you in the right direction for therapy or counseling.

How can I manage my stress?

If you find that stress lies at the root of your problems, there are many things that you can do to try to manage it. Different methods work for different people, so keep at it until you find one that works for you. The first thing that you should do is make sure that you have identified the source of stress, and if possible, attempt to change it. While this is impossible if the stress is caused by the loss or behavior of a loved one, there is definitely something you can do if the stress is caused by a job or an irresponsible friend. When you remove the thing that creates stress from your life or exert control over it, you will find that your stress related issues will disappear or become greatly minimized.

Similarly, some people deal with stress by engaging outwardly. They use relaxation techniques like yoga or jogging to clear their minds and give them a place to think.

If you feel that your stress-levels are affecting the way you live your life, don’t be afraid to take charge! Through good stress management, you can banish health-related stress issues and enjoy a better standard of life.
