Gum disease has also been linked to heart disease and strokes and is a common dental problem that may result in tooth loss. Basically, it is an infection in the gums surrounding the teeth. It is also one of the main causes of tooth loss among adults. There are two major stages of gum disease: Gingivitis and Periodontitis. These are the most common types of gum disease that exists. Ultimately the gums shrink with age, exposing the tooth to decay or infection. However, gum disease involves the inflammation of the gums and then can later turn into an infection. Good dental hygiene such as regular brushing and visits with a dentist can be great preventive measures for gum disease. This is important because, when teeth decay, they hold bacteria that is spread throughout the body. This can make individuals, especially children, susceptible to other problems such as sinus and ear infections. As for how it begins, it starts with the plaque that accumulates on your teeth. It is there, you just don’t know it. Men are more likely to have gum disease than women. Gum disease develops when plaque is allowed to build up along and under the gum line. The gums may be sore, bleed with little reason, and appear swollen. In the early stage of gingivitis, The soreness and bleeding may be evident during brushing. Bleeding may not always be a signal of gum disease, but it is a signal that the mouth is not healthy and needs attention. This can eventually develop into gum disease, which could eventually result in tooth loss.

Below are some tips to help you both prevent and treat gum disease:

1. Brush morning and evening. Make sure you floss before brushing and always use an antiseptic mouthwash before you are finished. That way you can kill any bacteria that was not taken care of during the brushing.

2. Use an oral balm during your brushing routine. These are balms that are usually made of natural ingredients. They are great at repairing any damage that has already occurred. They are used in addition to your regular brushing.

3. Make sure you always keep up with your dental visits. Regular cleanings are very important toward keeping your mouth healthy.
