Yeast infections are very, very unpleasant. Whenever I develop one I am always very anxious to get rid of it, and unfortunately it seems like I get them several times a year. I can’t tell you how shocked I was when, after researching on the internet, I found out that when you treat a candida infection with medicine, you are only providing a temporary solution. Chances are if you developed one, it will happen again and again. The good news is that with a few simple modifications to the way you live, you can say adios to yeast infections forever.

Here are a few of the more common “triggers” that can lead to an infection:

1) Lowered Immune System: When we get sick, our body is more vulnerable to infection. This means it is a lot easier for a yeast infection to occur. To help combat this, be sure to treat your illness right away. A lot of Vitamin C is a big help here.

2) Overuse of Antibiotics: Antibiotics can do a lot of good, saving us from infections, but they also kill the bacteria that we have in our bodies that actually fight off yeast infections. Try to limit your use of antibiotics and only use when necessary: Food with a lot of sugar (and also alcohol) contain ingredients that will increase your chance of developing a candida infection. Be sure to limit how much you eat.

So what kinds of things then, can you do to help decrease the chance of a yeast outbreak?

1) Eat Lots of Yogurt: Yogurt (the natural kind, without artificial sweetners) contains a great deal of Lactobacillus acidophilus. This handy bacteria will help to fight against candida outbreaks. It is also a great thing to eat when you have an actual infection.

2) Avoid Damp Underwear: Yeast infections thrive in damp, wet areas. Be sure to stay away from clothing that is damp. I have found that cotton underwear seems to be the safest.

These are just some of the important things that you can do to fight off those nasty yeast outbreaks. Remember, when you treat a yeast infection with medicine, you are only treating the symptoms. If you do not take a closer look at how you developed the infection you are just opening yourself up for a chronic infection.
