About Rhinoplasty (Cosmetic Nose Surgery)

Genetics, an injury or a previous surgical procedure can give people a reason to be unhappy with the appearance of their nose. The function of the nose may be compromised due to structural issues, such as a deviated septum. All of these problems can be answered with rhinoplasty, or cosmetic nose surgery.

In your consultation with one of our plastic surgeons, your goals will be reviewed and a full health history will be taken. The doctor will examine your face, take photographs and make recommendations on how to reshape the nose based on his findings. Any potential risks or complications will be addressed as well.

Rhinoplasty can be performed using an open or closed method under anesthesia. During closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are made inside the nose, while open rhinoplasty sees an incision across the small tissue between the nostrils called the columella. Cartilage from parts of the body is used to help reshape your nose’s structure, and the septum can then be straightened, if necessary. After the incisions are closed, a splint may be used to aid in the healing process.

Swelling and bruising will likely occur but should subside in a few weeks. As the swelling fades, you’ll begin to notice the difference in your nose’s appearance, yet it may take a year to fully see the final results.

The doctor will provide you with post-op instructions that must be followed to ensure the desired results are obtained. Follow-up appointments are crucial, so the doctor can examine the new structure and make sure your nose is healing properly.

If you’re concerned with the appearance of your nose or if a deviated septum is keeping you from breathing clearly, a skilled plastic surgeon can help.
